Our Family Adventure Across Australia: 24 Days on the Road
We just wrapped up a whirlwind 24-day family road trip across Australia, and let me tell you, it was everything. From Sydney’s iconic Opera House to surprise kangaroo sightings at sunrise, here’s a look at the highs, lows, and all the unexpected moments in between!
Day 0: Düsseldorf and Flight to Melbourne
We started in Düsseldorf with a hearty German breakfast before heading to the airport. Just before boarding, Tobi reminded Jolien to check her status match—score! We skipped the economy line and joined the Business Class queue, making our long-haul flight far more comfortable.
A layover in Doha came with a two-hour delay, but Gisele (at 10.9 kg) fit snugly into her bassinet. After 23 hours of travel, we landed in Melbourne, eager to start our adventure.
Day 1: Exploring Melbourne’s Docklands and Laneways
After sleeping in to recover, we ventured out from our Docklands accommodation. While lunch wasn’t memorable, the day quickly picked up as we explored Victoria Gardens and admired the street art on Hosier Lane. A pitstop at Lune Croissanterie for their legendary croissants was a must—flaky, buttery, and worth every bite.
TIP: For a unique Melbourne experience, try Hopetoun Tea Rooms for tea and cakes or book a Melbourne laneway walking tour to discover hidden gems.
Day 2: Coffee, Culture, and Late-Night Chaos
After a rough night with Gisele waking frequently, we started late and used Melbourne’s free trams to reach Fitzroy. We grabbed a Melbourne Starbucks mug for our collection, then visited the Melbourne Museum for its kid-friendly exhibits and immersive displays.
Later, we sipped wine at Marion Wine Bar before exploring a boutique audio store. Dinner featured Thai takeout again (it’s that good in Melbourne!). A Moscow Mule rounded out the night while we worked on syncing Gisele’s sleep schedule.
Day 3: A Relaxed Day in Melbourne
This day was all about slowing down. We explored more of Melbourne’s laneways, enjoyed café stops, and admired the bustling riverfront. Dinner at Tonka, a fusion Indian restaurant, was a standout.
TIP: Book a table at Vue de Monde if you’re looking for a fine-dining splurge. For casual eats, try Chin Chin for modern Australian-Asian cuisine.
Day 4: Camper Life Begins – The Great Ocean Road
We picked up our six-person camper and hit the Great Ocean Road. Hungry Jack’s burgers fueled us for the day. Stops included Split Point Lighthouse and the dramatic coastline at Memorial Arch.
We ended the day in Lorne, grabbing a last-minute campground spot after calling ahead. Our first night in the camper came with a mini adventure when we temporarily locked ourselves out—but we laughed it off.
TIP: Pack snacks and water for the road, as roadside options can be limited. A portable Wi-Fi device is handy for navigation.
Day 5: Koalas, Rainforests, and the Twelve Apostles
The day started with koala spotting at Kennett River—look up in the eucalyptus trees! We stopped for lunch at Apollo Bay and enjoyed fresh fish and chips. A walk through the lush Maits Rest Rainforest was serene, with ancient ferns towering above us.
The highlight was the Twelve Apostles, starting with Gibson Steps for a close-up view and ending with sunset views of the Apostles themselves.
TIP: Arrive early or stay late at the Twelve Apostles to avoid crowds. Bring layers, as it gets windy.
Day 6: Kangaroo Wake-Up Call and Camper Troubles
Waking up to kangaroos grazing near our camper was surreal! We detoured to London Arch, another stunning coastal formation, before heading back to Melbourne to fix a camper lock.
After a successful repair, we drove to Warburton and stayed two nights surrounded by towering trees and lush greenery.
TIP: Warburton’s Redwood Forest offers an easy yet magical walk through rows of Californian redwoods.
Day 7: Rainforest Walks and Wine Tastings
Rain put a damper on our waterfall hike plans, so we drove the scenic Black Spur and spent the day exploring wineries instead. Domaine Chandon impressed with its sparkling wines and oysters, while Oakridge Wines provided the perfect bottle to bring back to camp.
TIP: For foodies, book lunch at Ezard at Levantine Hill for a wine-and-dine experience.
Day 8: Art, Hikes, and Vineyards
This day blended art gallery visits and short hikes. A highlight was another winery stop where Gisele loved playing on the soft grass.
Day 9: Wildlife Adventures at Moonlit Sanctuary
We visited Moonlit Sanctuary for up-close encounters with kangaroos, a python, and cuddly koalas. Gisele couldn’t stop smiling! After more wildlife fun, we ventured to Stony Point, where a muddy off-trail detour added some excitement.
TIP: Wear comfortable shoes and plan a few hours for Moonlit Sanctuary to enjoy its interactive exhibits.
Day 10-13: Phillip Island, Squeaky Beach, and Raymond Island
We soaked in the Peninsula Hot Springs before heading to the Penguin Parade on Phillip Island. Watching little penguins waddle ashore was a memory to treasure.
At Wilson’s Prom, Squeaky Beach delivered soft, squeaky sand, while short hikes offered sweeping views. We took the ferry to Raymond Island, where wild koalas stole the show.
TIP: At Raymond Island, bring binoculars for koala spotting and pack a picnic for a relaxing day.
Day 14: Whale Watching in Eden
A whale-watching tour in Eden brought us close to these majestic creatures. Surprisingly, Gisele’s cries seemed to attract them!
TIP: Bring motion sickness tablets for the tour and book ahead during whale season.
Day 15-16: Kiama Blowhole and Rainy Jervis Bay
Kiama’s famous Blowhole made for a fun stop. Rain limited our plans in Jervis Bay, but seafood and bird-watching kept the day enjoyable.
Day 17-20: Blue Mountains Adventure
We explored the stunning Blue Mountains, hiking to the iconic Three Sisters and riding the Scenic Railway—a steep, thrilling journey. Wentworth Falls and Grand Canyon Track offered incredible vistas, while Gisele enjoyed running around at Echo Point.
TIP: For an adventurous experience, try canyoning tours in the Blue Mountains or book a stay at Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley for luxury in nature.
Day 20-24: Sydney Finale
Our last days in Sydney were packed with highlights. We toured the Sydney Opera House, relaxed at Bondi Beach, and strolled through the Royal Botanic Gardens. Gisele loved splashing in the Sofitel Darling Harbour pool.
Our final dinner at Bennelong in the Opera House was the perfect ending.
TIP: Book the Coastal Walk from Bondi to Coogee for breathtaking views. Take a ferry ride to Manly Beach for a relaxing day trip.
Australia, You Were Magical
From sweeping coastlines to wildlife encounters and vibrant cities, this trip was packed with unforgettable memories. Gisele’s smiles, Tobi’s camper victories, and Jolien’s knack for finding koalas made this a trip to treasure forever. Where will the road take us next? Let’s find out!
